Handheld Vaporizers and Why Battery Life Matters

Handheld vaporizers, also known as vape pens, are small, lightweight, sleek and discreet. They are effortlessly portable. You can carry one around in your pocket, vaporize your favorite herb, wax or oil whenever you want and wherever you please, you can recharge the battery using a car charger and you can even switch concentrates through the day or night. Portable handheld vaporizers have been game changers. Desktop vaporizers have been around for a long time. Handheld vaporizers were launched after electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes attained phenomenal popularity. However, there are some teething concerns with some handheld vaporizers and one of the common glitches is with the battery.

Any portable device that runs on battery will need to have enough power to last a substantial period of time. In short, whether or not the device is worthwhile and your purpose is served will be determined by the battery life. It is futile to use handheld vaporizers if all you can do is vape two to three times in the day, each session lasting a few minutes, before the battery goes kaput. You can always recharge the battery but it is most certainly inconvenient. No one wants a vaping session to end midway or the battery to run out of juice in the middle of the day.

Understanding Battery Life in Handheld Vaporizers

Handheld vaporizers do not produce as much vapor as desktop vaporizers. The latter also produces more flavorful vapors. There is no denying these two facts. The only reason why handheld vaporizers have become so popular is portability. The luxury of vaporizing marijuana or cannabis, herbs or oils, waxes or concentrates anywhere and anytime is at the crux of it all. Most people using handheld vaporizers are fine with the quality of the vapor, the volume and the flavor, as long as the battery lasts through the day. The convenience of pressing a button to start the atomizer and to begin vaping almost instantaneously is unmatched. No desktop vaporizer offers such a quick vaping experience.

What this also means is that a handheld vaporizer or vape pen is also drawing enough power to kick start the atomizer and it enables the heating element to attain very high temperatures in a jiffy. Naturally, such batteries discharge pretty quickly. As is the case with any battery that discharges quickly, it will need to be recharged sooner than later. Fortunately, as a user you have a certain degree of control. It starts with choosing a handheld vaporizer that has a powerful and reliable battery.

As you may be aware, handheld vaporizers mostly use lithium ion batteries. These are the same kinds that power smartphones and other portable electronic devices. Some brands of vaporizers have started using other types of lithium batteries so read the fine print on the pack or product description if you are shopping online. The capacity of the battery will determine how long it will last. A 1000mAh lithium ion battery will not last as long as a 2000mAh lithium ion battery. If you are considering some other type of battery, such as lithium polymer battery, then you cannot compare their capacities with that of lithium ion battery. Even the same capacities would not lead to the same battery life. Lithium polymer battery stores less power than lithium ion batteries and they have a shorter lifespan.

The capacity of a battery is not the sole factor that determines how long it would last. Your usage would be a decisive factor. A weaker battery will last longer for someone who vapes only once or twice through the day compared to a stronger battery that has to keep a handheld vaporizer running every few minutes. Again, the usage alone would not be the only factor influencing battery life. What material you are using in the vaporizer will have a major role. If you are using a concentrate that requires higher than usual temperature setting or too much heat consistently for the vaporizer to keep producing quality vapor then your battery life will be cut short. As you can gauge, the battery life depends on the type, capacity, usage and the temperature settings.

Types of Batteries in Handheld Vaporizers

Most batteries in handheld vaporizers use universal chargers. Most batteries use 510 threading which is also universal. Thus, you can use the same batteries for different atomizers and you can also use the car charger or other universal chargers to recharge the battery. How fast your battery will get recharged is another matter and whether or not you can vape while the battery is getting recharged will depend on if the vaporizer supports passthrough charging.

Usually, batteries in handheld vaporizers allow you to change the wattage settings. This determines how much power you would be drawing from a battery at a chosen temperature setting at a given point in time. The variable wattage setting is important since many concentrates demand more heat and hence power for optimum quality vapor. There are other oils and waxes that do not require such high settings. The changing wattage setting is also crucial from the perspective of recharging.

The voltage also becomes a quintessential factor here. Some batteries can get fully recharged in one hour. Some batteries may take up to eight hours to get completely recharged. The passthrough charging facility allows the vaporizer to be used as long as there is some charge while the device is getting recharged. This is a helpful feature for those who want to vape on the move while the car charger is recharging the battery.

You would find batteries in handheld vaporizers have a voltage range of 3V to 5.5V. There are other ranges as well and you can adjust the exact voltage depending on your needs. You will find wattage range of 6W to 40W. There are variations in this range too. You can adjust the wattage to suit your vaping needs. Most handheld vaporizers will come with single button control or a display with more controls. There will be preset settings of temperature such as 350°, 390° and 430°. These temperature settings, the colored display and other features will also draw power and hence affect battery life.
